PSNM 2005 CHRISTMAS PARTY Go Top

The Philippine Society of Nuclear Medicine celebrated its 2005 Christmas Party at the University of Santo Tomas Hospital last December 9, 2005. The party was preceeded by a Paper Presentation of prospective graduates of Nuclear Medicine Residency / Fellowship Programs for the year 2005. These are Dr. Arlene O. Ortiz (St. Luke's Medical Center), Dr. Eric B. Cruz (St. Luke's Medical Center), Dr. Bernard D. Marcelo (University of Santo Tomas Hospital), Dr. Michele A. Duldulao (Philippine Heart Center) and Dr. Marcelino A. Tanquilut (Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center).

Dr. Ortiz's study entitled "The Clinical Utility of FDG-PET as a diagnostic tool in Gynecologic Malignancies" was adjudged the best paper. The new graduates are candidates for the Diplomate Examination to be given by the PSNM Specialty Board on January 14, 2006.




PSNM - PNRI MEETING - WORKSHOP Go Top

The Philippine Society of Nuclear Medicine in cooperation with the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute held a Meeting -Workshop on "Doses in Diagnostic Procedures in Nuclear Medicine" at the Atrium 2 Meeting Room, MAB, Philippine Heart Center last November 12, 2005. The results of the nationwide survey on the doses in diagnostic procedures in Nuclear Medicine was discussed with the aim of developing national guidance levels of activity for such procedures.



INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON RADIOPHARMACEUTICAL THERAPY Go Top

The International Conference on Radiopharmaceutical Therapy was held in Limassol, Cyprus last October 11 - 14, 2005. The conference was organized by the World Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Council in collaboration with The Cyprus Society of Nuclear Medicine. The Philippine delegation was led by Dr. Teofilo O.L. San Luis, Jr. as Chair of the Thyroid Scientific Session and Dr. Emerita A. Barrenechea, who chaired the scientific session on Bone Pain Palliation.

Six scientific papers were presented at the conference. These include

TRAINING COURSES IN NUCLEAR MEDICINE Go Top

The IAEA Regional Training Course on PET was held at the Biomolecular Imaging Research Center, University of Fukui, Fukui, Japan last October 3 - 7, 2005. The Philippine delegation included Dr. Gerard Goco, Mr. Joselito De la Cruz and Ms. Cecilia Caro, all from PET Center of the St. Luke's Medical Center.


Dr. Eddie Lim (St. Luke's Medical Center) attended another IAEA - RCA Regional Training Course on the Radionuclide Treatment of Liver Cancer was held in Islamabad, Pakistan last November 8 - 12, 2005.


Another training course on "The Medical Applications of PET and Cyclotrons and Radioisotopes" was held in Seoul, Korea last August 24 to September 13, 2005. The Philippine representatives include Dr. Emerita A. Barrenechea (Veterans Memorial Medical Center) and Dr. Bonan Achiles G. Mendoza (Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center).




2005 ASIAN REGIONAL COOPERATIVE COUNCIL IN NUCLEAR MEDICINE GENERAL MEETING Go Top

The 4th Asian Regional Cooperative Council in Nuclear Medicine General Meeting was held at the Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand last August 15 - 17, 2005. PSNM President Dr. Orestes P. Monzon led the Philippine Delegation. He also delivered a plenary lecture "Diagnostic and Prognostic Value: The State of the Art in SPECT Myocardial Perfusion Scintigraphy". The ARCCNM Meeting coincided with the Mid-Year 2005 Scientific Meeting of the Nuclear Medicine Society of Thailand.


Nine scientific papers were presented at the conference with Asian Regional Cooperative Council in Nuclear Medicine (ARCCNM) support. These include

The 2006 ARCCNM meeting will be held in Seoul, Korea coinciding with the 9th Congress of World Federation of Nuclear Medicine and Biology .




PSNM SCIENTIFIC MEETING IN NUCLEAR MEDICINE Go Top

The Scientific Research Committee of the PSNM conducted the 1st Inter-Hospital Interesting Case Presentation last July 7, 2005 at the Rizal Memorial Medical Center.

Cases of special interest in clinical nuclear medicine were presented by Dr. Gerard Goco (Thyroid Cancer - Rizal Medical Center), Dr. Emelyn De Jesus (WB I-131 with SPECT/CT - St. Luke's Medical Center), Dr. Rafael Peralta (V/Q Scan - Philippine Heart Center), Dr. Bernard Marcelo (Bone - UST Hospital), Dr. Eric Cruz (Bone - St. Luke's Medical Center), Dr. Thomas Pascual (GI - UST Hospital) and Dr. Robert Tan-Gatue (GI - Makati Medical Center).




PSNM 20TH ANNUAL CONVENTION Go Top

The Philippine Society of Nuclear Medicine held its 20th Annual Convention with a theme "Radionuclide Therapy: Current Trends and Applications" at the Holiday Inn Galleria Manila last February 4, 2005. Invited speakers include Dr. Cornelius Hoefnagel (Netherlands), Dr. Ajit Kumar Padhy (India) and Dr. Manfred Fischer (Germany).


Additionally, pre-convention scientific meeting was also held last February 2, 2005 at the St. Luke's Medical Center. Dr. Padhy lectured on Radionuclide Therapy for Liver Cancer while Dr. Hoefnagel talked on Specific Targeted Therapy for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Carcinoid Tumors.


Another pre-convention lecture was also held last February 3, 2005 at the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center. Dr. Padhy gave a lecture on Interventional Nephro-Urology while Dr. Hoefnagel focused on Role of Nuclear Medicine in Breast Cancer.


Post-convention lectures were also scheduled last February 5, 2005 at the Davao Doctors Hospital. The three foreign experts shared their expertise on the radionuclide therapy. Dr. Padhy talked on Palliative Treatment of Metastatic Bone Pain, Dr. Hoefnagel on Non-Radioiodine Avid Thyroid Cancer - Causes and Solutions and Dr. Fischer on Thyroid Cancer/ Toxicosis Management.


Outgoing PSNM President Dr. Emerita A. Barrenechea also delivered her valedictory address to the society during its annual business meeting.




PSNM Fellowship Night Go Top

The 2005 Annual Convention was concluded with a fellowship night that included the induction of new associate and regular members, diplomats, fellows and the new set of Board of Directors. This was followed by singing and dancing activities


Eight regular members, after meeting the society's requirements and successfully passing the board exams were conferred the title of Diplomate in Nuclear Medicine . These were: Dr. Raymund Augustus Conlu (Philippine Heart Center), Dr. Eddie Lim (St. Luke's Medical Center), Dr. Juanito Olpindo (St. Luke's Medical Center), Dr. Arnold Isidro (UST Hospital), Dr. Emily Hope Jardeleza (Cardinal Santos Memorial Medical Center), Dr. Ramon Varela (Long Island Jewish Medical Center), Dr. Valentino Dabuco (Cardinal Santos Memorial Medical Center) and Dr. Rhiamar Gomez (Makati Medical Center).

The Induction and Candle Ceremonies were led by Dr. Antonio C. Garcia, Chair of the PSBNM and Dr. Emerita Barrenechea, PSNM President.


On the same night, Dr. Ajit Kumar Padhy was also conferred the title "Honorary Fellow of the Philippine Society of Nuclear Medicine" . He was the second foreign fellow of the society. Additionally, "Distinguished Service Awards" to the Pioneers of PSNM were also given that night. The awardees included Dr. Juan F. Torres, Jr. (UST Hospital), Dr. Edmundo C. Villacorta (Makati Medical Center), Ms. Virginia Manipol (Manila Endocrine Laboratory). They were cited in honor of their significant contribution to the growth of Nuclear Medicine in the Philippines.


The new PSNM Board of Directors was also inducted during the Fellowship Night. The new set of officers are as follows: Dr. Orestes P. Monzon (President), Dr. Consolacion O. Obmerga (Vice-President), Dr. Gerard Fabian L. Goco (Secretary), Dr. Vincent Peter C. Magboo (Treasurer). Dr. Ma. Lourdes M. Taylan (Auditor), Dr. Ruben V. Ogbac (Director), Dr. Jonas Y. Santiago (Director), Dr. Jose Eduardo S. Rondain (Director) and Dr. Leandro C. Manalaysay (Director).


The Contest was ruled by St. Luke's Medical Center. Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center came in second. Singer Dulce provided intermission numbers, enthralling her audience with her impeccable performance.
