The Philippine Society of Nuclear Medicine will have its 20th Annual Convention with a theme "Radionuclide Therapy: Current Trends and Applications". This will be held at the Holiday Inn Galleria Manila on February 4, 2005. Invited speakers include Dr. Cornelius Hoefnagel (Netherlands), Dr. Ajit Kumar Padhy (India) and Dr. Manfred Fischer (Germany).

Additionally, pre-convention scientific meeting will also be held on February 2, 2005 at the St. Luke's Medical Center. Dr. Padhy will lecture on Radionuclide Therapy for Liver Cancer while Dr. Hoefnagel will talk on Specific Targeted Therapy for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Carcinoid Tumors.

Another pre-convention lecture will also be held on February 3, 2005 at the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center. Dr. Padhy will lecture on Interventional Nephro-Urology while Dr. Hoefnagel will focus on Role of Nuclear Medicine in Breast Cancer.

Post-convention lecture is also scheduled on February 5, 2005 at the Davao Doctors Hospital. The three foreign experts will share their expertise on the radionuclide therapy. Dr. Padhy will talk on Palliative Treatment of Metastatic Bone Pain, Dr. Hoefnagel on Non-Radioiodine Avid Thyroid Cancer - Causes and Solutions and Dr. Fischer on Thyroid Cancer/ Toxicosis Management.

The Philippine Society of Nuclear Medicine recently made a resolution on the qualification of a physician to administer radionuclide therapy. Herewith is the official reply of the PSNM Board to the query made by Dr. Roberto C. Mirasol, Philippine Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism President, on behalf of the Officers and Board of Directors of PSEM


The Philippine Society of Nuclear Medicine will be having its 2004 Christmas Party at the Amorsolo Hall, Makati Medical Center on December 4, 2004. The party will be preceeded by a Paper Presentation of Graduates of Nuclear Medicine Residency/Fellowship Programs. The new graduates are candidates for the Diplomate Examination to be given by the PSNM Specialty Board on January 15, 2005.

Everyone is enjoined to attend this activity.


The The 8th Asia Oceania Congress of Nuclear Medicine and Biology was held at the Beijing International Convention Center in Beijing, China last October 9 - 13, 2004. PSNM President Dr. Emerita A. Barrenechea led the Philippine Delegation.

Five scientific papers were presented at the conference with Asian Regional Cooperative Council in Nuclear Medicine (ARCCNM) support. These include

The 2005 ARCCNM meeting will be held in Thailand while the 2006 ARCCNM meeting will coincide with the 9th Congress of World Federation of Nuclear Medicine and Biology in Seoul, Korea.


The Philippine Society of Nuclear Medicine conducted several scientific meetings of special interest in clinical nuclear medicine. Two lectures were held at St. Luke's Medical Center last May 13, 2004. Dr. Jose Manuel Atienza lectured on "Gallium-67 Imaging in Inflammation and Tumors" while Dr. Masoud Elgadafi presented "Dacryoscintigraphy". Another set of lectures was given last May 27, 2004 with Dr. Francis Estrada on "GI Bleed Scintigraphy" and Dr. Glenn Sy on "Urea Breath Test".

For the month of June 2004, additional lectures were given by Dr. Ma. Lourdes Mania-Taylan on "Neurendocrine Tumor Scintigraphy" and by Dr. Vincent Peter C. Magboo on "Parathyroid Scintigraphy". Both lectures were held at the St. Luke's Medical Center. Last June 25, 2004, another lecture was given by Dr. Emily Hope O. Jardeleza on "Hepatobiliary and Liver/Spleen Scintigraphy". This was hosted by the Department of Nuclear Medicine, Cardinal Santos Memorial Medical Center

A scientific forum will be hosted by the Section of Nuclear Medicine, FEU-NRMF Medical Center on September 15, 2004. This is a joint undertaking of the Philippine Society of Nuclear Medicine and the Philippine Association of Nuclear Cardiology. PSNM President Dr. Emerita Andres Barrenechea will present "Should All Thyroid Cancer Remnants Be Ablated ? " while Dr. Emma Angela D. Jacob will lecture on "Cardiac Blood Pool Imaging: First- pass RNA, ERNA, Basic Principles".

Future lectures or scientific meetings will be posted later. Everyone is encouraged to attend.


The PSNM sponsored pre-convention scientific lectures last February 3, 2004 at the St. Luke's Medical Center and at the Makati Medical Center. Dr. Isabel Roca, an IAEA Expert on Pediatric Nuclear Medicine from Spain conducted an interactive session on "Pediatric Nuclear Medicine Cases". This was followed by a lecture by Dr. Manfred Fischer from Germany on "Management and Diagnosis of Osteoporosis".

Another Interactive Session on "Local Problematic Cases in Pediatric Nuclear Medicine" by Dr. Isabel Roca was held last February 4, 2004 at the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center.


The Philippine Society of Nuclear Medicine held its 19th Annual Convention with the theme Pediatric Nuclear Medicine last February 6, 2004 at the Holiday Inn Galleria.

Prominent foreign and local Nuclear Medicine Experts delivered lectures dealing with Pediatric Nuclear Medicine. Dr. Manfred Fischer presented lectures on "Thyroid Diseases in Children: Role of Nuclear Medicine" and "Pediatric Skeletal Scintigraphy" while Dr. Isabel Roca gave lectures on "Radionuclide Nephro-Urology in Children", "Nuclear Medicine in Pediatric Oncology" and "Nuclear Medicine in Pediatric Gastro-Intestinal/Hepatobiliary Disorders". PSNM President, Dr. Emerita A. Barrenechea, discussed "Radiosynovectomy for Hemophiliacs" while Dr. Jonas Y. Santiago of the SLMC PET Center presented "PET in Pediatric Seizure Disorders".

The convention was well attended with representatives from nuclear medicine centers in Cebu, Davao and Iloilo also present.

PSNM Fellowship Night Go Top

The 2004 Annual Convention was concluded with a fellowship night that included the induction of new associate and regular members, diplomates and fellows, and singing and dance contests.

Six regular members, after meeting the society's requirements and successfully passing the board exams were conferred the title of Diplomate in Nuclear Medicine. These were:
- Dr. Kathleen Ross S. Caligagan (Cardinal Santos Memorial Medical Center)
- Dr. Imelda Lee Rivera (Philippine Heart Center)
- Dr. Asela Bustos-Barroso (Philippine Heart Center)
- Dr. Melquedes T. de Guzman, Jr. (Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center)
- Dr. Francis Gerard M. Estrada (St. Luke's Medical Center)
- Dr. Johann G.P. Mea (UST Hospital).

Four diplomates were also invited to become Fellow in Nuclear Medicine. These were:
- Dr. Gerard Fabian L. Goco
- Dr. Wesley Llauderes
- Dr. Vincent Peter C. Magboo
- Dr. Anna Jessica A. Ortiga.

The Induction and Candle Ceremonies were led by Dr. Antonio C. Garcia, Chair of the PSBNM and Dr. Emerita Barrenechea, PSNM President.

On the same night, Dr. Manfred Fischer was also conferred the title "Honorary Fellow of the Philippine Society of Nuclear Medicine" . He holds the distinction of being the first foreign fellow of the society.

The contest were ruled by SMLC. JRMMC came in second followed by UST in the dance contest. Singer Dulce provided intermission numbers, enthralling her audience with her impeccable voice.


PSNM have been conducting several lectures of special interest in clinical nuclear medicine. For the year 2004, the forum resumed last March 25, 5 pm at the St. Luke's Medical Center with a lecture on "Interpreting and Managing Unusual Thyroid Cases" by Dr. Eddie Lim.

Last April 15, 2004, two lectures were held at the St. Luke's Medical Center. The first lecture on "Lymphoscintigraphy" was given by Dr. Wesley Llauderes of Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center while Dr. Jonas Santiago of SLMC delivered the 2nd lecture on "Sentinel Node Scintigraphy".

Next set of lectures will be given by Mr. Nathaniel de Vera and Dr. Gerard Fabian Goco at the St. Luke's Medical Center on April 29, 2004. Mr de Vera will talk on "Gamma Camera, Quality Control Procedures" while Dr. Goco will give a lecture on "Drug Interactions with Radiopharmaceuticals". Everyone is invited.


St. Luke's Medical Center sponsored a symposium on the use of Rhenium-Lipiodol in the Treatment of Inoperable Liver Cancer last December 9, 2003. Dr. Felix Sundram gave a lecture on the "Transarterial 188 Re-Lipiodol in the treatment of inoperable HCC" while Dr. Maung Maung Saw presented "188 Re-HDD-Lipiodol as Therapeutic Radiopharmaceuticals for SIRT of HCC". The two experts also demonstrated how to do the labelling. Four liver cancer patients benefited from the treatment through the intraarterial method. The rhenium generator and the provision of experts were coursed through the International Atomic Energy Agency. Click here for a sample case.


Radiosynovectomy for rheumatoid arthritis and hemophiliac arthroses is still ongoing at St. Luke's Medical Center as part of the IAEA funded project in the Philippines. Click here for a sample case..


The International Congress in Nuclear Oncology was held in Puerto Alegre, Brazil last January 2004. Four papers were presented from the Philippines. These were:

PSNM have launched its inaugural issue of the Philippine Journal of Nuclear Medicine. It features original articles in nuclear medicine in the Philippines as well as articles of clinical interest. Contributors may inquire through its editor, Dr. Jerry M. Obaldo.

International Symposium on Nuclear Oncology in Porto Alegre, Brazil last January 19-23, 2004 was organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
8th Congress of Asia Oceana Federation of Nuclear Medicine and Biology (AOFNMB) was held in Beijing, China from October 9 - 13, 2004. There was no ARCCNM Annual Meeting that year, but financial support was provided to the participants. The deadline for paper submission was April 30, 2004. ARCCNM co-sponsored this event.
